Google Authenticator is a software-based authentication tool that provides a two-factor authentication (2FA) service for users looking to add an additional layer of security to their online accounts beyond just a password. It is available as a mobile app for both iOS and Android devices.
For Phones (iOS and Android):
1. Download the Google Authenticator App:
- iOS (iPhone/iPad): Open the App Store, search for "Google Authenticator," and download the app.
- Android: Open the Google Play Store, search for "Google Authenticator," and install the app.
2. Set Up an Account in Google Authenticator:
- Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone.
- Tap on "Begin" or "Set up account" from the welcome screen.
- Choose "Scan a barcode" if you can scan a QR code provided by the service you're securing (most common method), or choose "Enter a provided key" if you were given a secret key to manually enter.
3. Scan QR Code or Enter Key:
- If scanning, use your phone's camera to scan the QR code provided by the service (e.g., Google, Facebook, etc.) during the setup of 2FA.
- If entering a key, type in the account name (e.g., your email) and the key provided, then tap "Add."
4. Verification:
- After adding the account, a six-digit code will appear in the app.
- Enter this code on the website or service where you're enabling 2FA to verify the setup.
5. Completion:
- Once verified, the setup is complete. The app will generate a new code every 30 seconds for this account.
Note that browser plugins may also be available, and will work in a similar way. Here is one you can try: https://authenticator.cc
